چکیده

The role of the renin-angiotensin system as an aldosterone stimulating factor in the mammal is well-established (1, 2). A high salt intake diminishes the demand to conserve sodium in the body, and the secretion of aldosterone is decreased by the control of renin angiotensin system. Decreased renin activity on a high salt diet has been shown in the mammal (3-5). In 1942, Friedman, Kaplan, and Williams found the absence of renin in the kidney of marine fish, but detected it in the fresh water fish (6). If this be true, renin-angiotensin would play a role in salt adaptation of the fish. We kept Japanese eels in both fresh and sea water for 3 to 11 weeks, and determined the renin content of the kidney, to see if eury halinity is controlled by renin in eels. We found a decrease in renin of those kept in sea water, and suggested that the renin-angiotensin system plays a part in salt adaptation (7). The purpose of this paper is to give details of these studies on Japanese eels and other euryhaline fishes adapted to sea water.

Adaptive changes of the water permeability of the teleostean gill epithelium in relation to external salinity.

Fresh-water teleosts, whose blood is hypertonic to the external medium (about 330 m-osmoles/kg. vs. a few m-osmoles/kg.), face the problem of osmotic entry of water and loss of electrolytes, while sea-water teleosts live in an environment (1150 m-osmoles/kg.) which induces osmotic loss of water and a diffusional influx of electrolytes. Many data are available on the electrolyte balance of fish ...

Sodium and water balance in the cichlid teleost, Tilapia mossambica.

The ability of some fishes to live in both sea water and fresh water has attracted a great deal of interest. Many euryhaline fishes are difficult to rear in laboratory conditions ; some do not survive in completely fresh water, and migratory fishes are often euryhaline for only limited periods during their life-history. Species of the genus Tilapia have none of these disadvantages; they are eas...

The Visual Systems of Euryhaline Fishes

1. The retinas of all marine fishes so far examined except the Labridae, and of all terrestrial vertebrates contain the rhodopsin system alone; those of fresh water fishes the porphyropsin system alone. In the present paper the visual systems of a number of euryhaline fishes are examined-fishes capable of existence in a wide range of salinities, though usually restricted in spawning either to t...

Osmoregulatory Parameters of Asian sea bass (Lates calcarifer) during adaptation in Freshwater

In the present study, the adaptation of Asian sea bass (lates calcarifer) was investigated in fresh water using physiological parameters of osmoregulation including: the plasma levels of thyroid hormones and cortisol, gill Na+/ K+-ATPase activity and plasma concentrations of sodium and chloride. For this purpose, 60 fish were distributed in three 300 L tanks with a density of 20 fish per tank. ...
